Spirit
Bear Voyages & Mothership Sea Kayaking with Northern Lights
Expeditions
With the Spirit
Bear, our 40-foot charter vessel, we offer the most exceptional
mode of exploration on the coast, the small, personalized charter
with the option of mothership kayak tours. We meticulously converted
this former salmon fishing boat into a comfortable, floating base
of exploration for kayaking, hiking and beach-combing the coast.
In
September, 2006, at the Victoria Classic Boat Festival, the largest
classic vessel gathering on the west coast, judges named the Spirit
its Best in Class for vessels of its type. It’s a perfect
platform for watching whales, sea lions, eagles all the rest of
the myriad sea life in our cruising area. Porpoises love riding
along under the bow of the Spirit Bear as we travel to each new
anchorage. We have a full galley where gourmet meals are prepared
and a small boat to take us on side trips. And we carry kayaks to
use whenever we choose.

For our 25th
Anniversary, our new cruising area is the Mediterranean-climate
of the southern British Columbian Gulf Islands waters. The Spirit
Bear’s April through October season will find her traveling
throughout the islands on routes custom designed to satisfy each
group’s preferences. The possibilities are nearly endless.
The waters offer some of the world’s best cruising and kayaking
and the islands have secluded beaches, isolated villages, great
hikes and abundant wildlife.
The Spirit Bear's skippers
know these waters intimately. Their natural history knowledge and
familiarity with the intricate waterways of the coast adds immeasurably
to your experience. A veteran Northern Lights guide and naturalist
is your trip leader for all your kayaking and hiking trips off the
boat.
The boat accommodates
up to five guests on charters of four days or more. Special itineraries
are created to satisfy any wish: orcas and eagle watching, photography,
gourmet sampling, exploring the local islands and seaside villages,
or simply kayaking in as many different habitats as possible. Our
24 years of experience in the Inside Passage make for the finest
mothership kayak tours in British Columbia.
Each day, we
have the option of moving many miles to an entirely new destination,
from the edge of the island group to the intricate waterways between
them. Whatever the weather, the Spirit Bear provides a comfortable
haven to pass the days. View our many
different trip options.
"The
Spirit Bear is a fabulous boat and I really grew attached to it
by the end of the week. And I'm not even a boat person. Everything
about our trip was fabulous."
