Orcas
and Minke Whales
Any day can
be a whale watching day on the Spirit Bear. The “southern
community” of “resident” killer whales (orcas)
makes this area its home for the summer months and one of the three
pods (families) spends the entire year here.
Whale watching is a very
popular activity in these waters. Most concerned observers believe
these whales have too little time in the summer months in which
they are left alone. So the Spirit Bear will not measurably add
to the traffic. Our encounters will be more of good fortune than
of pursuing and intentionally encountering them, to allow them to
live in peace as much as is possible.
We can arrange short
trips aboard a smaller whale watching boat for those who with to
take advantage of the opportunity, before, during or after your
time on the Spirit Bear.
Northern Lights Expeditions
has a long history of encountering whales in their natural habitat;
we have just as long a history of respecting the whales and relating
to them in a way that gives the utmost respect to their needs. We
will have great excitement, as always, when we do encounter them;
we just want all our guests to know that our standards are very
high in this regard.
"Excellent
trip quality! Whales, orcas, porpoises, otters, eagles. Very secure
navigation, very well maintained boat, safe anchorages, very accountable
crew."
